A study on SARS-CoV-2 transmission at a correctional facility has led the CDC to revise its definition of close contacts after the research showed the virus could be passed during brief interactions. Previously, the agency described close contact as spending 15 minutes or more within six feet of an infectious individual. However, in the study, a correctional officer was determined to have contracted the virus after relatively brief interactions.
The revised CDC guidance defines a close encounter as someone spending a cumulative 15 minutes or more within six feet of an infectious individual over 24 hours, even if the time is not consecutive.
